Camp Schreiber’s mission is to motivate and reward deserving teens who are pursuing their dream of higher education. Originally inspired by Geoffrey Canada, Camp Schreiber began as an idea to aid those overcoming significant obstacles on their path to higher education. With assistance from Teach for America, we identify and work with teens that show character and academic ambition in the face of challenging circumstances. We reward these teens with a trip to a summer camp in Canada and seek to enable them to continue towards higher education through additional support year round.
The camp is intended for 12-16 year old teenage boys from North Carolina. Selected in conjunction with organizations like Teach for America and the Boys & Girls Club, potential campers need to display drive, work ethic and outstanding character.
Camp Schreiber is a week long camp in July that focuses on team work, character building, educational goals and leadership through activities such as canoeing, hiking, fishing, swimming, and survival skills. In addition to the week at camp, Camp Schreiber provides tutoring and extracurricular activities for all campers during the 51 weeks in-between summer camp. Campers participate in approximately 4 hours a week in programming through Camp Schreiber. The ultimate goal for Camp Schreiber is to prepare campers for 4 years of college education and to create future leaders with in their communities.
The camp is designed to increase confidence, encourage continued education and most importantly, to have fun. Campers will experience new activities like hiking, canoeing, fishing and camping outdoors. Outside of their normal environment, campers will get to see a new part of the world and discover new things about themselves. We also encourage the campers to attend college through daily college sessions and regular writing periods.
